Abstract

Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is a respiratory disease more dominant infected in toddlers and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases worldwide. ARI is affected by environmental factors such as indoor air pollution (temperature, humidity, occupancy density), human behavior factors (smoking habits, using insect repellent, and the habit of opening windows), and individual factors of toddlers. This study aims to determine the relationship between the physical quality of indoor air and occupant behavior with an incidence of ARI in toddlers in Bukit Kecil District, Palembang City flats. The research used a cross�sectional study with a sampling technique using purposive sampling of 110 respondents. Data were analyzed by univariate and bivariate with the chi-square test. The results showed that smoking habits are associated with the incidence of ARI in toddlers (p-value = 0.023). The temperature, humidity, occupancy density, the habit of using insect repellent, the habit of opening windows, immunization status, and birth weight are not associated with the incidence of ARI in toddlers in Flats, Bukit Kecil District, Palembang City. The smoking habit of family members can be a risk for toddlers to experience ARI incidents. Anticipate that residents of flats would stop smoking or carry out smoking activities near toddlers and clean themselves after smoking activities before interacting with toddlers.
