Abstract
Mental retardation is a condition which is caused by organic and non organic factors. Based on research by Vigild M in United States about teenagers having mental retardation without Down syndrome age 13-19 years old, there is an increase of anomaly frequency more than normal people, such as 27% extreme maxilla overjet, 6% mandible overjet, 17% mesial molar occlusion, 23% frontal open bite. and 29% crossbite. The purpose of this research is to find out the relationship between mental retardation and dental malocclusion in teenagers age 12-17 years old at YPAC Palembang in 2009 and to determind the kind of malocclusion frequently existing in mental retardation teenagers. The methode of this research is cross sectional and 37 sampels were taken by purposive sampling technique. Maloklusi index used in the research is HMAI. The result shows that there is a significant relationship between mental retardation and dental malocclusion in teenagers age 12-17 years old at YPAC Palembang in 2009, with p value = 0.014. Malocclusion frequently existing in teenagers with mental retardation age 12-17 in years old at YPAC Palembang in 2009 is severe malocclusion about 37,83%.
