Abstract

The prevalence of brushing teeth correctly is just a little in Indonesia. Because of the difficulty to ensuring p/acjue removal by mechanical method, antibacterial agents are to complenientary of brushing teeth methods. One of the natural products that have antibacterial properties is propolis. Propolis is proven to be effective in inhibiting the growlh of oral bacteria and inhibit dental plaque formation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect iveness of propolis solution as an antibacterial mouthwash with a consentralion of 3% dan 3,75% in inhibiting dental plaque formation. The methodology that used was experimental study with pre-post test with control group design. The research was located in Palembang. The population and sample of this research was 24 respondents. Where the sample divided into 4 groups. A group that rinsing with aquadest as a negative control, rinsing with clorhexidine gluconate 0,2% as a positive control, rinsing with 3% propolis solution, and rinsing with 3,75% propolis solution. Data that were taken was the dental plaque score 10 hours, 11 hours and 12 hours after rinsing. The data were analyzed by using statistical parametric One Way ANOVA test then continued by using post hoc test (p<0,05). Based on the study result was found that f value>f table (10 hours (49,30), 11 hours (58,09), 12 hours(55,07); 8,66) the result showed that there was an effect of rinsing with propolis solution with p<0,05. The conclusion that obtainable from this study was rinsing 3% and 3,75% propolis solution had effect in inhibiting dental plaque formation.
