Abstract

Despite the increasingly abundant research on bilingual/multilingualism, researches on family English bilingual practice in Indonesian contexts are still limited. This paper is aimed to discuss parental language ideologies, family literacy practices and language enrichment used to acquire English in two Indonesian families in South Sumatra as well as the challenges that the families faced. Case study design was used to examine the translingual practice. Interviews and observations were conducted to collect the data from the two families. Categorizing strategies (coding and thematic analysis) were accomplished to analyze the data. Findings of this study highlighted translanguaging, code-switching and code-mixing as the families’ common literacy practices at home. Moreover, the interview results led the highlight on the importance of bi-/multilingualism to escalate the children’s academic and cognitive part especially on learning bahasa Indonesia. Parents also believed that there would be hope on a better future career after acquiring English. Another finding revealed the critical role of digital media, such as TV programs, YouTube videos, online games and books in supporting the children’s English acquisition. Implications of this study included the need to pay attention to the family literacy practices as important components of understanding how second language socialization occurred outside of the formal schooling and the role of digital media in mediating this socialization process.
