Abstract
This study was conducted to produce local content-based instructional pictorial reading materials for tenth graders which were valid, practical, and had potential effect based on the result of produced group reading assessment (GRA) which had been validated prior to its use to develop the materials. In developing the product, a procedure suggested by Akker (1999) consisting of needs analysis, design, evaluation, and revision phases was followed. Needs analysis was done before designing phase. The genre of the texts, learning objectives, and prototypes of product were determined in the design phase. Using formative evaluation proposed by Tessmer (1993) covering experts review, one-to-one, small group, and field test, all of the products were measured by questionnaires and the GRA which had been correlated with the standardized test by Stark Jr. (1981). Then, the obtained data from the questionnaires for both GRA and reading materials were analyzed based on the objectives of the study. However, only experts review and field test were administered for the GRA. The results showed that the developed GRA and reading materials were categorized as highly valid. Based on the results of the field test, the produced reading materials were determined to be potentially effective to be used as reading materials since they were significantly correlated with GRA (0.420) and 76.47% students could achieve the intended learning standard based on the 2013 curriculum.
