Abstract
Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases. RAS could make patients feel discomfort and it would reduce the guality of life, therefore it need an adequale treatment to accelerate healing and reduce pain. The purpose of this study was to evalule the ejfect of snakehead fish extract on healing duration and pain reduction of RAS. This experimental study was using pretest-posttesl with control group consisted of 38 female students of Dentistry Study Program Medical Faculty of Sriwijaya University with minor RAS. Subjects were divided into two groups : snakehead fish extract group and aquadest group as control. The subject of each groups were instructed to apply snakehead fish extract or aquadest three times a day for seven days. Healing duration of RAS was observed until recover and pain was measured by using visual analog scale (VAS) at days 0, 3, and 7. The results showed that healing duration of RAS was significantly faster in snakehead fish extract group compared to aquadest group (P<0.05). VAS scores at days 3 and 7 in snakehead fish extract group were significantly lower than aquadest group (P<0.05). There were significant differences ofVAS scores at days 0, 3 and 7 in both groups (P<0.05). It can be concluded that snakehead fish extract improve healing potential and pain reduction ofRAS
