Abstract
Introduction: S. aureus is a bacterial pathogen causing wide variety of infections. Resistance of S. aureus to various antibiotics was reported to have occurred, one of the most dangerous is the resistance of S. aureus to methicillin (MRSA). MRSA is a major cause of infection in hospitals. Antibiotics used as a drug of choice for MRSA infections is vancomycin. Increased use of vancomycin for MRSA therapies increase the risk of S. aureus resistance caused by irrational prescription of antibiotics. Therefore the aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility pattern of S. aureus to the antibiotic vancomycin at RSMH Palembang. Methods: This observational descriptive study was conducted at the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory RSMH Palembang in October to November 2012. Object of this research is the results of the culture S. aureus from various clinical specimens of patients in October 2011-September 2012, amounting to 1552 isolates. Sources of data in this study is a secondary data about susceptibility test results of S. aureus to vancomycin were taken from the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory RSMH Palembang. Results: The number of S. aureus isolates were obtained from 25 different clinical specimens is as much as 1552 isolates. Specimens with the most S. aureus isolates were obtained from pus, followed by urine, sputum and blood. Susceptibility test results of S. aureus to vancomycin in this study indicate 1513 isolates of S. aureus with inhibition zone diameter > 12 mm, 1 isolate of S. aureus with inhibition zone diameter 10-11 mm and 38 isolates of S. aureus with inhibition zone diameter < 9 mm. Conclusion: S. aureus sensitive-vancomycin (VSSA) accounted for 1513 isolates (97.5%), which S.tfwrewj-intermediete-vancomycin (VISA) was found in 1 isolate (0.1%), and S. aureus- resistant-vancomycin (VRSA ) was found in 38 isolates (2.4%).
