Abstract
Liquid lipstick is a cosmetic type of lip color that is currently in great demand by consumers. Repeated use of liquid lipstick can cause the growth of pathogenic microbes such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Chitooligosaccharide is a derivative of chitosan resulting from the deacetylation of chitin and has been widely reported to have biological activity as an antimicrobial. This study aims to obtain the best formula for liquid lipstick preparations from various concentrations of chitooligosaccharide that meet qualified microbiological requirements. The preparation of liquid lipstick was carried out by varying the concentration of chitooligosaccharide preservatives, namely 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75% compared to the preservatives methyl paraben and propyl paraben. Lipstick preparation, evaluation of the preparation, stability, and microbiological analysis were carried out. Data analysis was carried out to obtain the best formula for liquid lipstick preparations. The best formula for lipstick preparation liquid is found in Formula 3 with a concentration of 0.5% chitooligosaccharide, which has a liquid form, a red color, a vanilla aroma, a soft texture, is homogeneous, and has a preparation pH of 5.43, a viscosity of 1,158.95 cps, a spreadability of 6.23 cm, an adhesion time of 65.4 seconds, good rubbing power, and is not irritating. Organoleptic properties and homogeneity resulted in good stability in the cycling test. However, there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in the pH parameter. The microbial contamination test results were 0 CFU/mL, and the negative results identified Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Liquid lipstick with a concentration of chitooligosaccharide preservative is superior in inhibiting the growth of mold or yeast and inhibiting Candida albicans contamination compared to liquid lipstick with methyl paraben and propyl paraben preservatives. Chitooligosaccharide can be formulated in liquid lipstick preparations and can affect durability and microbial contamination.
