Abstract

Instagram is one of the most popular social media among teenagers today. Teenagers use Instagram to show their own existence and social life. Adolescence is the age when teenagers are looking for identity. Because of that, Instagram is a medium that can be used by teenagers to channel their creativity. The purpose of this study is to explain the formation of female adolescent self-identity in Tebing Tinggi District, Empat Lawang Regency through Instagram social media. The basis of his theory is the identity theory of Manuel Castells and identity construction. This study used descriptive qualitative method. with data obtained from six informants consisting of five informants consisting of five teenage girls in Tebing Tinggi District, Empat Lawang Regency. The data collection method uses in-depth interviews, in addition to making the data more comprehensive, observations and documentation studies are also carried out. The results of this study indicate that teenagers already have a self-concept of how they will upload photos to Instagram. Environmental influences are one of the factors that influence the formation of adolescent self-identity on the Instagram social network. Keywords: Instagram, New Media, Youth, Self Identity
