Abstract
Pack carburizing is a heat treatment process using carbon content as an element to increase the mechanical properties of steel which is used to harden the steel surface. This research uses low carbon steel as a test specimen, the steel used is ST 42 steel. The aim of this research is to see whether there is an effect of variations in water content from the lowest to the highest, the carbon used is medang wood charcoal which is used in the pack carburizing process. The specimen will be tested for hardness using the Vickers hardness test, which results in a hardness value for the pure specimen of 180.001 kgf/mm2. The highest hardness value in this carburizing pack was obtained on specimens with a water content of 15% with a value of 230.173 kgf/mm2. It can be concluded that variations in water content in the medang wood charcoal affect the hardness of the specimen.
