Abstract

Background: Forward Head Posture (FHP) is a type of postural disorder that is described as the position of the head and neck anteriorly across the vertical line of the body when viewed laterally. The causes of FHP are improper and non-ergonomic posture habits and activities that cause the head to stay forward for long periods of time. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between smartphone addiction and forward head posture in medical students at Sriwijaya University Batch 2018. Method: This study is an analytic observational study using a cross-sectional approach. The number of samples in this study amounted to 62 medical students at Sriwijaya University batch 2018 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Smartphone addiction level was assessed using the Indonesian version of the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) questionnaire, and FHP was assessed from the craniovertebral angle through a lateral self-image which was measured using the kinovea application. Data analysis was carried out through SPSS. Results: In the assessment of the prevalence of smartphone addiction, there were 8 (12.9%) subjects with severe addiction, 48 (77.4%) subjects with moderate addiction, and 6 (9.7%) subjects with low addiction. Meanwhile, in the prevalence of FHP, 50 (80.6%) subjects had FHP, and 12 (19.4%) subjects did not have FHP. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the relationship of smartphone addiction and FHP with a value of (p = 0.000). Conclusion: There is a significant difference relationship between smartphone addiction and forward head posture in medical students of Sriwijaya University batch 2018. Keywords: Smartphone addiction, FHP (Forward Head Posture), SAS (Smartphone Addiction Scale), craniovertebral angle.
