Abstract

The importance of knowledge about nutrition facts for adolescents to have their attitude improved in choosing healthier packaged foods is emphasized. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of nutrition facts education on knowledge and attitudes towards packaged foods selection among adolescents aged 16-18 years in Palembang City. The research design is employed quantitative research using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test post-test and a control group design. In June 2023, the study was conducted at SMAN 2 Palembang as the experimental group and SMAN 10 Palembang as the control group. The sample in this study consisted of 60 respondents, divided into two groups: 30 respondents in the experimental group, who were intervened upon through mini booklets, food models, and material explanation using PowerPoint, and 30 respondents in the control group, who received material explanation using PowerPoint. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using t-test (p < 0,05). The results indicated that the knowledge and attitudes towards packaged foods selection among adolescents aged 16-18 years in Palembang City were influenced by nutrition facts education, as demonstrated by paired sample t-test in the experimental and control group (p = 0,000 and p = 0,029). The differences in the level of knowledge and attitudes between the experimental group and control group were revealed by the independent sample t-test (p = 0,048 and p = 0,037). The conclusion of this study indicate that nutrition facts education has an effect on the knowledge and attitudes towards selecting packaged foods among adolescents aged 16-18 years in Palembang City. It is suggested by researchers that the knowledge and materials obtained can be applied by adolescents in everyday life, so that wiser choices can be made by them when selecting packaged foods to be consumed.
