Abstract

The low productivity of Kampung chicken has been a major challenge in meeting the demand for Kampung chicken-based food products. An alternative solution that has the potential to be applied to Kampung chickens is the use of an asam kandis extract as acidifier. The aim of this research is to study the effect of adding asam kandis extract to drinking water on the performance of Kampung chickens. The research was conducted in August 2023 for 5 weeks in the experimental poultry ranch of the Undergraduate Programme in Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The study was conducted experimentally using the Completely Randomised Design (CRD) method, using 48 Kampung chickens aged 4 months. The trial consists of 4 treatments with 6 repetitions each. Treatments given are P0 (water without treatment), P1 (water + asam kandis extract on pH 2.4), P2 (water + asam kandis extract on pH 3.4), and P3 (water + asam kandis extract on pH 4.4). Data analysis was carried out in the form of an ANOVA. The observed variables were body weight gain, water consumption, and feed conversion rate. The results of the research showed that the addition of asam kandis extract to drinking water did not significantly (P≥0,05) affect body weight gain, water consumption, and feed conversion rate of Kampung chickens. The results obtained for body weight gain ranged from 170,2 – 184,42 g/bird/week. The results obtained for water consumption ranged from 256,63 – 326,5 ml/bird/day. The results obtained for feed convertion ratio ranged from 3,75 – 4,0. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that the addition of asam kandis extract has yet to improve the performance of Kampung chickens.
