Abstract
Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Nees) contains andrografolid, a compound that has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities to accelerate burn wound healing. This study evaluated the preparation of submicro emulsion of bitter melon leaf extract with Tween 20 and PEG-400 at a concentration of 10% and tested the burn wound healing activity in Wistar rats. This study was divided into 5 treatment groups in the form of normal, positive (tekasol), negative, 1% sambiloto cream and 1% submicro emulsion. The characterization of submicro emulsion showed a transparent green, distinctive aroma and a liquid texture and pH value of 5.3±0.173; viscosity 2.807±0.270cP; density 1.065±0.002gr/cm3; andrographolide content 19.44±0.34%; entrapment efficiency 95.97±0.14%; globul size 175.733±13.081nm; polydispersity index 0.315±0.026; zeta potential 30.6±0.458mV and irritation scoring was 0. Burn wound activity test observed the time of scab formation and detachment, measuring burn area and %Recovery. The 1% sambiloto submicro emulsion showed time of scab formation and detachment on the 4th and 12th with %Recovery 92.05±0.93%, which is greater than 1% sambiloto cream (85.05±1.99%) and the negative group (62.88±3.67%). Histopathological analysis showed epithelial and collagen density as well as the distribution of inflammatory cells that did not dominate in the submicron emulsion 1%. ANOVA results confirmed significant differences in burn healing between the submicro emulsion and 1% sambiloto cream (p<0.05). Keywords: Burn wound, sambiloto, scab, submicro emulsion
