Abstract

Cardiac arrest is one of emergency conditions that causes the work of heart to stop and could be in death if not treated immediately. Handling cardiac arrest is carried out by providing basic life support with chest compresses that can be done by lay helpers such as online motorcycle taxi riders because the majority of this profession spends their time on the road. The helper’s knowledge and attitude greatly influences basic life support actions that are fast and appropiate to reduce delays and minimize the risk of death. This study aims to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes of online motorcycle taxi riders towards basic life support actions in the cases of cardiac arrest. This research design used quantitative descriptive methods. The sample in this study was 106 respondents taken by using accidental sampling techniques in Palembang City. This research data was collected by questionnaires that distributed on a paper. Respondents in this study were male 93.4%, did not have a job other than online motorcycle taxi riders 75.5%, respondents never helped victims with cardiac arrest 93.4%, had received BLS information through online media 41.5%, were in the age range of 36-45 years 45.3% and had a recent high school education 75.5%. The results showed that 46.2% of respondents had sufficient knowledge, 29.2% of respondents had less knowledge, 24.5% of respondents had good knowledge, 54.7% of respondents had a positive attitude and 45.3% of respondents had a negative attitude. The results showed that not all respondents have a good knowledge and a positive attitude so that the provision of BLS information and training is very necessary to improve respondents knowledge and attitudes towards basic life support actions.
