Abstract

Background: Wasting and severely wasting are nutritional status based on WHZ (Weight for Height) index. The incidence of wasting in preschoolers reflect the nutritional deficiencies in preschoolers because is a sensitive index to determining current nutritional problems. The preschool phase is a time when children become active consumers who can determine their meals, if their nutritional intake is inadequate, they may become wasted. Various factors that can risk causing wasting are picky eater behavior and parenting style. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of picky eater behavior and parenting style to incidence of wasting in preschool children in Jambi Luar Kota Sub-District. This study was aimed to analyze relationship between picky eater behavior and parenting style with wasting in preschoolers in Jambi Luar Kota Sub-District. Methods: This was an quantitative study with a cross sectional design. Target population in this study were all preschool children aged 3-5 years in Jambi Luar Kota Sub-District. A sample of 84 preschoolers in Working Region of Puskesmas Penyengat Olak was selected for this study by purposive sampling. Result: Based on the results of the study 11 of preschoolers (13,1%) were found to be wasted. There is a significant relationship between picky eater behavior and wasting in preschoolers (p-value 0,043) There is no relationship between parenting style and wasting in preschoolers (p-value 0,143). Conclusion: Preschoolers with picky eater are risk of wasted, It is recommended for mothers to increase knowledge of variety and interesting foods for children.
