Abstract
Indonesia is a country that has a tropical climate and a high rainfall throughout the year. South Sumatera Province. especially Palembang City also have a fairly high rainfall so it can be used as a ravv water to supply community’s needs of clean waler and drinking water. The rainwater that drops without any intermediaries can aclually be consumed directly, but the rainwater that drops on air polluted area can carry the poilutant so we can not consume it directly. One altemative that can be used to treat the rainwater is a biosand filter dovvn flow. This study aims to determine the efTcct of using a biosand filter to change the rainwater quality. The filtering process is done vvithin two stages, filtration using a slow sand filter with gravel, sand, charcoal as filter material and the second filtration using biosand filter with gravel and sand as filter material.the filtering process can be done once the biofilm layer grows on sand that have been soaked for about a month. Based on the research revealed that biosand filter can reduce the levels of iron (Fe) from 0,03 mg/L to 0,01 mg/L, manganese (Mn) from 0,01 mg/L to less than 0,003 mg/L, pH from 6,62 to 7,35, but failed to get rid of all the E.coli bacteria in the filtered water so this water have not meet the requirements for drinking water and must be cooked before being consumed.
