Abstract

This study aimed to determine the hematological response of Etawah cross (PE) goats at normal and hot temperatures. The hypothesis in this study was that PE goats that experience heat stress would experience changes in their hematological characteristics. The study used six PE goats which were placed in cages at normal temperature (360C) and hot temperature (390C). Blood sampling was done once a week. Parameters measured were the levels of hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, hematocrit, glucose and cholesterol. Statistical analysis was carried out by comparing the parameters measured using the T test at the level of P <0.05. The results of the study concluded that hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and hematocrit did not change, glucose decreased while cholesterol values increased in hot temperatures. Blood glucose level could be caused by a decrease in feed consumption while the increase in cholesterol could be associated with the mobilization of body fat reserves.
