Abstract
The research objectives were to identify the minimum levels of pollen viability and amount of pollen which where the best to yield the greatest number of the oil palm seeds in an assisted pollination. The research was carried out in the Breeding Research Station of PT. Binasawit Makmur Sampoema Agro at Surya Adi, Mesuji, Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatera from Mei 2006 to January 2007. The research consisted of two sets of experiments that were done and analized separately. The first experiment got pollen source from pisifera origin Ghana and the second one got pollen source from pisifera origin Ekona. The first experiment was outlined as a Factorial Completely Randomized Design with four replications, while the second experiment was outlined as a Factorial Completely Randomized Block Design with four replications. They were consisted of two factors of treatments. The first factor was pollen viability consisted of four levels, namely pollen viability of 50-60%, 61-70%, 71-80%, and 81-90%. The second factor was amount of pollen which consisted of four levels, 0.05; 0.1; 0.15; and 0.2 anthesising inflorescence. The first experiment indicated that the pollen with viability 61% (V2) seemed to be a minimum level that may be used for assisted pollination. Maximum percentage of fruit set were obtained at amount of pollen 0.15 g per anthesising g Per inflorescence (D3). The second experiment indicated that the pollen viability and amount of pollen didn’t have significantly influence to fruit set of oil palm.
