Abstract

High-intensity ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes negative impacts on human skin including hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Skin exposed to UV rays needs to be protected by using sunscreen. The study aims to determine the potential of sunscreen gel extracts and fractions of red shoot leaves (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.). S. myrtifolium leaves were extracted by the maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. The green ethanol extract of S. myrtifolium leaves was then separated from chlorophyll compounds by the vacuum liquid comatography (KCV) method to obtain fractions. The determination of in-vitro SPF values on extracts and fractions was carried out at concentration variations of 5%, 7%, and 10% using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and calculated by the Mansur method. The 10% concentration obtained the highest SPF value in the ultra protection category, with SPF values of 21 (F1) and 16 (F2) selected to be formulated into sunscreen gel. The sunscreen gel preparation was then physically evaluated including organoleptics, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and washability, with results that met the requirements of good gel preparation standards. The SPF values of F1 and F2 sunscreen gels were obtained at 20 (ultra protection) and 14 (maximum), respectively. The results of the F1 and F2 stability tests were declared stable to temperature changes characterized by the absence of the syneresis phase in each formula and stable to UV exposure characterized by AUCI values >0.80, namely F1 of 0.89 and F2 of 0.85. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the gel preparation formulation of extracts and fractions of S. myrtifolium leaves has the potential as a sunscreen.
