Abstract
Background: Empathy is the ability to sense or imagine the emotional experiences of others. This ability is crucial in medical practice as it is one of the important factors in the healing process of patients consulting with a doctor. However, various studies and trials indicate that the level of empathy among doctors and medical students tends to be low. This study aims to provide an overview of the level of empathy among a group of medical students. Method: This study employed a descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach, where the empathy scale questionnaire was directly administered to the respondents for completion. Results: The research sample consisted of 119 students in the medical education program at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. The research results show that the dominant empathy scores fall within the good category (51.3%), but further research is needed to validate it. Conclusion: Based on the research, it can be concluded that the majority of respondents are female aged 18-21 years, in their second year of study, from urban areas, and the majority have not yet decided on a specialization. Overall, the majority of students demonstrate a good level of empathy. Keywords: empathy, medical students
