Abstract

This research is motivated by the use of Instagram social media which is popular among Communication Science Students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Sriwijaya University who use Instagram with various motives so that it has an impact on their self-image. this study aims to determine and explain whether there is an influence on the motives for using Instagram media on self- image and how much influence it has. The motive for using the media as the X variable initiated by Mc Quail (1987) has four dimensions, namely information, personal identity, integration and social interaction and entertainment. While self-image as variable Y described by Schiffman & Kanuk (2004) consists of four dimensions including actual self image, ideal self image, social self image, and ideal social self image. This study uses a quantitative approach and distributes questionnaires to 92 respondents with sample collection using probability sampling techniques with simple random sampling types. The data obtained were then analyzed using the simple linear regression method with the help of software (Stastical Package for the Social Sciences) SPSS version 23. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant influence of media usage motives on self- image with a T value of 7.719 and a significance of 0.000. and an R square value of 0.398, meaning that 39.8% of self-image is explained by media usage motives and the other 60.2% is explained by the outher factors outside this study.
