Abstract

Low back pain is a musculoskeletal complaint caused by injuries to the spinal bones, nerves, muscles, and other structures in the lower back. The Indonesian government estimates that the prevalence of low back pain in Indonesia ranges from 7.6% to 37%. One of the risk factors for low back pain is lifting heavy weights, such as the deadlift. Deadlifts performed with improper technique increase the risk of lower back injuries. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between deadlift movements and the incidence of low back pain in gym communities in Kemuning District, Palembang. This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 48 respondents from two gym in the Kemuning District. Data were collected through questionnaires on sociodemographic factors, completion of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) to assess deadlift characteristics (frequency, weight, and duration) as well as documentation of the deadlift posture. The study found that the majority of gym members performing deadlifts were under 35 years old (80%); most were male (73.3%); and non-smokers (82.2%). Bivariate analysis using Pearson’s Chi-square test showed p-value = 0.001 for posture, p-value = 0.030 for weight, p-value = 0.828 for frequency, and p-value = 0.848 for duration in relation to low back pain. Poor posture and excessive weight are associated with the incidence of low back pain.
