Abstract

Health development aims to improve the quality of human resources. Indicators of success include reduced infant mortality and improved nutritional status. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding from birth to the first 6 months. Breastfeeding has the benefit of reducing infant morbidity and mortality, preventing various infectious and non-infectious diseases. Exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Indonesia has decreased from 69.7% in 2021 to 67.96% in 2022. Several studies have shown low maternal knowledge and attitudes towards breastfeeding. In South Sumatra, exclusive breastfeeding coverage decreased from 51.6% in 2020 to 45.4% in 2021. This study was a descriptive observational research (survey) with a cross-sectional design was conducted at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang from June to December 2024. The population was mothers with babies admitted to the neonate room and NICU, a sample of 86 mothers was taken by purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria: mothers willing to be included in the study. Exclusion criteria: mothers who took drugs and infections that contraindicated breastfeeding. Independent variables included age, education, occupation, socioeconomics, type of delivery, frequency of breastfeeding, number of parities, breastfeeding experience, and ever received breast milk. The dependent variables were knowledge, attitude, and practice of breastfeeding. Data were processed and analyzed descriptively using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS). The results of the study on 86 respondents showed that mothers had good knowledge as much as 87.2% and good behavior as much as 74.4%. But the mother's attitude was still unfavorable 41.9%. Most mothers with infants admitted to the Neonate and NICU rooms have good knowledge and behavior, but their attitudes are still unfavorable.
