Abstract

Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain is a diagnosis for 70-80% of individuals with chronic pain. This condition can occur at all age levels, including adolescents, productive young adults, and the elderly. Disorders in the productive age group have a significant impact on motivation and work ethic as they affect physical, mental, and emotional aspects, which in turn influence the quality of life and socioeconomic conditions of the patients. Chronic pain can result from work-related factors such as physical activities and poor dietary habits. A diet that includes excessive consumption of high-glycemic index foods can lead to hyperglycemia. Persistent hyperglycemia results in chronic hyperglycemia, which causes an accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in various body tissues. The binding of AGEs to their receptors (RAGE) triggers the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and induces oxidative stress. This study aims to determine the relationship between high glycemic index diets with oxidative stress levels, and chronic musculoskeletal pain levels in productive-age workers in Palembang City. The study used a case-control design. Data revealed that the majority of respondents (83.33%) had high-glycemic index dietary patterns. Chi-Square analysis showed a significant relationship between high glycemic index diets and oxidative stress levels, with a p-value of 0.001 (p ≤ α = 0.05). Meanwhile, the relationship between high glycemic index diets and chronic musculoskeletal pain levels resulted in a p-value of 0.002 (p ≤ α = 0.05). It can be concluded that a high-glycemic index diet has a significant relationship with oxidative stress levels and chronic musculoskeletal pain levels.
