Abstract

Stunting or "short children" is defined as failure to grow and develop caused by poor nutrition, proofed by height for age with a z-score < -2 WHO standard deviation. This study was conducted at one of the state elementary schools in Seberang Ulu I Palembang. From the early survey, it was found that the most children with a z-score < -2 were at SDN 075 compared to other elementary schools. In this case, we will find out the relationship between eating dietary diversity and eating patterns in school-age children because these two components bring such a big impact to children's development and growth, especially physically growth, like height which is closely related to stunting. This quantitative study was using a cross-sectional design, involving 56 school children aged 6 – 9 years that shuffled using simple random sampling technique. Data collection was carried out by filling out the research questionnaire containing the characteristics of respondents and their families, followed by carrying out a 3x24-hours food recall. Then the dietary diversity of the respondents could be seen using the IDDS form. The results showed that dietary diversity and eating patterns have a significant correlation (p = 0.035, p < 0.05 and p = 0.042, p < 0.05). From the research, can be concluded that there is a 35,7% incidence of stunting at SDN 075 Palembang. Almost all respondents had poor eating patterns (87.5%) and poor dietary diversity (58.9%). The suggestions that can be put forward are to educate the students and parents regarding the importance of good diet and diversity also introduce them to a healthy canteen with a lot of food variety.
