Abstract

Medical students experience high levels of stress due to academic pressures. Stress can be categorized into eustress and distress. Stress can influence eating behavior, such as overeating or loss of appetite. Eating behavior serves as an effort to alleviate anxiety, enhance self-acceptance, and provide a sense of security for oneself and others. In this study, eating behavior is viewed as a coping mechanism or a way to reduce feelings of insecurity caused by external pressures. This research is conducted based on the researcher's concern about the high levels of stress among medical students. This type of research is observational analytic using cross-sectional design with total sampling technique. The data used in this study are primary data obtained by filling out the PSS-10 and AEBQ questionnaires. Data processing was done through Microsoft Excel to be edited and analyzed using SPSS 27. Based on the research, 322 respondents were surveyed, of which 257 respondents (79.8%) experienced moderate stress, 55 respondents (17.1%) had severe stress, and 10 respondents (3.1%) had mild stress. In terms of eating behavior, 161 respondents (50%) tended to approach eating, while 161 respondents (50%) tended to avoid eating. From the combination of cells in the severe and moderate-light stress level categories, a significant effect of stress level on eating behavior was observed (p = 0.005), with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.371 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.285–4.373. The results show that respondents who are prone to eating have a 2.371 times higher likelihood of experiencing severe stress compared to those with mild or moderate stress.
