Abstract

Chinese betel (Peperomia pellucida) contains secondary metabolite compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, saponins, and triterpenoids. This assay aims to determine the hepatoprotector activity of ethanol extract of chinese betel herb by observation of biochemical parameters, macroscopic, and histopathology of the liver of carbon tetrachloride-induced wistar rats (CCl4). The test was carried out for 21 days on 30 rats divided into 6 groups, namely normal control (Na CMC 0.5%), negative control (CCl4 1 mg/kgBW), positive control (Silimarin 100 mg/kgBW), treatment group I-III (Chinese betel herb ethanol extract with doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW). The data analysis results showed that treatment groups II and II were able to significantly (p<0,05) maintain SGPT, SGOT, ALP, and Total Bilirubin levels. Meanwhile, treatment group I only managed to maintain SGPT and SGOT levels. Macroscopic observation of the liver showed normal criteria, except in the negative control group. Histopathological examination of the test animals’ livers was conducted by scoring steatosis, inflammation, and necrosis. The 400 mg/kgBW dose of extract exhibited the best histopathological features compared to other dose variations.
