Abstract

Consumption of foods and beverages high in sugar is one of the lifestyles that contribute to the increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Excess sugar intake can trigger insulin resistance, which in turn leads to increased blood sugar levels. This study aims to analyze the relationship between high sugar food consumption patterns and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia using secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) with a cross-sectional research design. The study sample consisted of 491,251 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Bivariat analysis using the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between high sugar food consumption patterns (p-value = 0.000; PR = 0.345), age (p-value = 0.000), gender (p-value = 0.000), employment status (p-value = 0.000), smoking behavior (p-value = 0.000), physical activity (p-value = 0.000), alcohol consumption (p-value = 0.000), body mass index (p-value = 0.000), and central obesity (p-value = 0.000) with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results of multivariat analysis showed that high sugar food consumption patterns had a significant association with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (PR = 0.356; CI95%: 0.326-0.389) after controlling for the variables of age, gender, education level, employment status, fruit and vegetable consumption, alcohol consumption, body mass index, physical activity, and central obesity. This finding emphasizes the importance of controlling sugar consumption as an effective preventive measure in reducing the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Continuous educational efforts and nutrition interventions need to be carried out to form a collective awareness that maintaining a balanced sugar intake is not just an option, but an integral part of efforts to improve the quality of public health in Indonesia.
