Abstract

Chinese betel herbs contain a variety of bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids and phenolics, which have the potential to protect the stomach from damage. The content of flavonoids and phenolics in Chinese betel herb extract was 14,524 mgQE/g dan 27,067 mgGAE/g. This study aims to evaluate the gastroprotective effect of Chinese betel ethanol extract through gastric macroscopic parameters, volume, pH, total acidity of gastric fluid, mucin levels, and histopathological observations. Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups, namely the normal group, the positive control (Omeprazole 20 mg/kgBB), the negative control (NaCMC 0.5%), and three treatment groups with Chinese betel extract at doses of 100 mg/kgBB, 200 mg/kgBB, and 400 mg/kgBB. The treatment was given for 14 days before being induced with absolute ethanol on day 15. The results showed that Chinese betel extract significantly (p<0.05) reduced gastric mucosal lesions, decreased the volume and total acidity of gastric fluid, and increased pH and mucin levels compared to the negative control group. The group with the highest dose (400 mg/kgBB) showed a gastropprotective effect close to positive control (p>0.05), suggesting that this extract had gastric protection potential comparable to Omeprazole. The higher the dosage of the extract given, the stronger the gastroprotective effect produced. Keywords: absolute ethanol, flavonoids, gastroprotective, peperomia pellucida, phenolic
