Abstract
Rubber wood sawdust, a lignocellulosic resource derived from industrial and agricultural waste, has the potential to be converted into biofuel. Rubber wood sawdust was pretreated to increase the accessibility of cellulose to enzymes. The pretreated rubber wood sawdust was then mixed with potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution at concentrations of 1% and 2% (w/v). Each mixture was heated conventionally for 30 minutes, followed by microwave penetration for 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes operating at 2450 mHz, with a power level of 10% (input microwave power of 145 Watt). Enzymatic hydrolysis was carried out with crude cellulase enzyme at a temperature of 50oC with variations in hydrolysis time of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 hours. The results showed that hydrolyzed for 25 hours, microwave exposure to 2% (w/v) KOH for 25 minutes reached 2.31 g/L of reducing sugar. Hydrolysate was fermented for 6 days with 12% (v/v) yeast to produce 1.5% (v/v) bioethanol. Analysis of enzymatic hydrolysis kinetics using Michaelis Menten obtained a k2 value that tended to be higher when the biomass was pretreated with 2% KOH microwave for 25 minutes, which was 0.5858 s-1. This method affects lignin degradation, increasing cellulose content with lower energy use.
