Abstract
Kangkong (Ipomoea reptans Poir) is one of the most popular leafy vegetables due to its high nutritional content. The increasing demand for kangkong must be accompanied by increased production. One way to enhance kangkong production is by expanding its cultivation areas. Utilizing areas with limited light intensity, such as under perennial plants or in urban home gardens, can serve as alternative cultivation sites for kangkong. This study aimed to determine the tolerance level of kangkong to shading and identify varieties that are tolerant to low-light conditions. The research was conducted in an experimental field located in Permata Baru Village (104º46’44”E; 3º01’35”S), Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, using artificial shading from July to September 2023. A split-plot design with two factors was employed. The shading levels, as the main plots, consisted of 0% (no shading), 55%, 70%, and 95%. The subplots consisted of two varieties, i.e., Bangkok LP-1 and Bika. The results showed that reduced sunlight intensity decreased the growth of kangkong. A shading level of 55% significantly reduced growth and yield, with increasing shading levels further suppressing growth. No significant differences were observed between the Bangkok LP-1 and Bika varieties in terms of growth or yield
