Abstract
Broiler chickens are poultry characterized by rapid growth and high feed conversion efficiency. However, they are sensitive to infections, have low adaptability, and require intensive management. Disease susceptibility is a major challenge in broiler production, as it can reduce performance and productivity. Feed additives such as Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGPs) are commonly used to enhance immunity and stimulate growth. However, according to the 2017 Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, the use of AGPs as feed additives is prohibited and is only permitted for bacterial disease treatment. As non-antibiotic alternatives, probiotic and acidifier are applied to improve gut health by lowering intestinal pH, suppressing pathogenic bacteria, and supporting production performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic and acidifier supplementation in the diet on the digestive tract pH of broiler chickens. The research was conducted over two months at the Poultry Experimental Farm, and pH measurements were carried out at the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feed, Animal Husbandry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. A total of 100 day old chicks Ross strain were used. The study was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and four replications, with five chicken per cage. The treatments consisted of: P0 (basal diet without additives), P1 (basal diet + 0.8% tetracycline + 0.8% acidifier), P2 (basal diet + 0.8% tetracycline + 1.2% acidifier), P3 (basal diet + 0.8% probiotic + 0.8% acidifier), and P4 (basal diet + 0.8% probiotic + 1.2% acidifier). The results showed that probiotic and acidifier supplementation significantly affected (P<0.05) the pH of the jejunum and ileum, but had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the pH of the duodenum. The pH values recorded were: duodenum 5.55–5.78, jejunum 5.58–5.80, and ileum 5.93–6.18. In conclusion, the supplementation of 0.8% probiotics and 1.2% citrus fruit waste derived acidifier effectively reduced the pH of the digestive tract, especially in the jejunum and ileum, thereby supporting better gut health in broiler chickens.
