Abstract

The open-pit mining system is used to extract thick coal seams and is carried out in stages using benches. This method is important due to its efficiency in exploiting large-volume resources. However, the low wall slope at PT. Banyan Koalindo Lestari, particularly in the North Pit, shows potential instability due to ongoing mining activities and varying geological conditions. To address this issue, a slope stability analysis is necessary, as instability can compromise work safety and the continuity of mining operations. To achieve this objective, a slope stability evaluation was conducted using the Generalized Hoek-Brown criteria and the simplified Bishop method with the aid of Slide 6.0 software. The analysis was supported by borehole data, rock mass classification using the Geological Strength Index (GSI), and rock mechanical parameters such as Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), the constant mi, and the Disturbance Factor (D). The results show that the low wall slope in the North Pit is composed of sandstone, mudstone, and coal seam 30. Several slope sections, such as BB’, C-C’, and D-D’, were found to be unstable under saturated conditions, with a factor of safety (FK) < 1.1, according to KEPMEN ESDM No. 1827 K/30/MEM/2018. To achieve FK > 1.1, recommendations for unsafe slopes involved modifying slope geometry: at B-B’ with a slope angle of 24° and a height of 76 meters; at C-C’ with a 22° angle and 79 meters height; and at D-D’ with a 22° angle and 83 meters height. These geometries were shown to be stable both dry and saturated conditions, making them suitable as design references for the low wall slope in the North Pit.
