Abstract

Silicon Carbide (SiC) is an inert solid material, very hard, not easy to melt and resistant to high temperatures, but brittle. Silicon Carbide is a compound resulting from the reaction of Silicon (Si) and carbon (C) at high temperatures. Its melting point is 2700°C. Polyester is a part of the polymer. Polyester resin chosen because has several advantages that a good adhesive, resistant to Chemical Solutions, processes are more convenient, the price is relatively affordable. By mixing a different material properties to be expected with a new tough material. In this study, unsaturated polyester mixed with Silicon Carbide with a size of 100, 150 and 200 mesh with ratio Silicon Carbide : unsaturated polyester 20:80 (weight) using hand lay-up method. Composite characteristics observed were tensile strength, impact strength and density. The optimum result got from variation of particle size by mesh 200, is that : the tensile stress is 2,537 kgf/mnr, the tensile strain is 0,519 % and the elasticity modulus value is 3,9537 N/mm2, impact energy value is 0.0293 J/mm2.
