Abstract

Indonesia ranked fourth in the world for the number of active smartphone users, with internet use dominated by Generation Z, including university students. Meanwhile, students tended to have low levels of physical activity due to academic demands. This study aimed to examine the relationship between smartphone usage intensity and physical activity with nutritional status among students of the Nutrition Program Faculty of Public Health Sriwijaya University. A cross-sectional design was used with 74 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The univariate results showed that smartphone use was evenly divided between low and high categories (50% each), with most respondents being physically active (64.9%) and having normal nutritional status (64.9%). The Chi-square test showed no significant relationship between smartphone usage intensity with nutritional status (p = 0.465), but there was a significant relationship between physical activity and nutritional status (p = 0.026), where less active respondents were 2,15 times more likely to have abnormal nutritional status. Future researchers are advised to use screen time data obtained directly from respondents devices to improve accuracy. Students are expected to use smartphones wisely, stay physically active, and maintain a normal nutritional status, while these findings may serve as input for the Faculty of Public Health Sriwijaya University in developing student health promotion programs.
