Abstract

The phenomenon of Shopee Paylater service usage among university students is linked to shifts in consumption behavior. This study aims to analyze the use of Shopee Paylater as a symbol of a consumptive lifestyle among students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Sriwijaya University, class of 2021. A qualitative approach was used, using descriptive methods, through in-depth interviews with eight informants who actively use the service. Analysis using Jean Baudrillard's symbolic consumption theory revealed that this consumptive behavior emphasizes symbolic and sign values over use values. The results show that students utilize Shopee Paylater not only to meet functional needs but also as a means to build self-image, follow trends, and demonstrate social presence. In conclusion, Shopee Paylater has become a representation of students' social identity, where use of this service reflects an image of modern, confident individuals who are in tune with their environment.
