Abstract

Biomass waste has the potential to be utilized as an alternative energy such as biomass briquettes. The research objective was to utilize biomass waste for briquette making and to determine biomass briquette performance. It was conducted by using Factorial Randomized Block Design with three treatment factors and three replication as follows: the first factors were A1 (80% water hyacinth powder), A2 (80% angsana leave powder), A3 (80 % corn leaves powder) and the second factors were B1 (20% kepok banana skin) and B2 (20% jackfruit seed) as glue, whereas the third factors were particle sizes of C1 (70 mesh), C2 (60 mesh) and C3 (40 mesh). The observed parameters were water content, hygroscopic property, ash content, calorific value, volatile matter content, fixed carbon content, density, initial ignition time, briquette burning rate, briquette burning efficiency and shatter index. The results showed that biomass material types, glue material, particle size of biomass material and treatment interaction had significant effects on water content, hygroscopic property, ash content, calorific value, volatile matter content, fixed carbon content and density. The lowest water content of 2.84% on A1B1C3, whereas the highest one of 10.88% on A3B2C3. The lowest hygroscopic property of 0.78% on A1B2C1, whereas the highest one of 4.53% on A2B2C1. The highest ash content of 15.75% on A2B1C3, whereas the lowest one of 6.64% on A2B2C1. The highest calorific value of 4,178.67 cal.g-1 on A₂B₂C₁, whereas the lowest one of 3,027 cal.g-1 on A₁B₂C₁. The highest volatile matter content of 66.2% on A₂B1C₁, whereas the lowest one of 54.57% on A₁B1C3. The lowest fixed carbon content of 14.11% on A₂B1C2, whereas the highest one of 18.58% on A2B1C3. The highest density of 1.07 g/cm3 on A1B1C2, whereas the lowest one of 0.75 g/cm3 on A3B2C3. The longest briquette ignition time of 153.55 sec on A₂B₂C₃, whereas the shortest one of 31.57 sec on A₁B1C₂. The highest briquette burning rate of 0.008179 g/s on A1B1C2, whereas the lowest one of 0.002583 g/s on A₁B2C1. The highest briquette combustion rate of 0.008179 g/s on A1B1C2, whereas the lowest one of 0.002583 g/s on A₁B2C1. The highest combustion efficiency value of 83.10% on A3B2C3, whereas the lowest one of 18.67% on A₁B2C2. The highest shatter index of 99.51% on A1B2C2, whereas the lowest one of 96.53%. on A3B2C3.
