Abstract

The water treatment system is the process of separating water from substances that are harmful to the body through some phases of filtering such as physical, chemical, and biological process. The main purpose of water treatment is to get healthy water that meet quality standards for clean drinking water. In general, a PLC-based SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system where the sensors and the actuators are connected to the PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) by cable, is used as the water control system in Indonesia. However, this monitoring water treatment system is inflexible, expensive, and can not be used in remote areas. Hence, this study aims to develop a monitoring system that can be accessed through web and smartphone applications so that it can monitor sensor measurements and motor control in real-time. Such technology is called as the Internet of Things (IoT) which can read data and control data only with an internet connection. The results show that IoT can be utilized to control pump motors from normally open to normally closed conditions. Based on the results from 4 different water samples, namely well water, refill drinking water, tea water, and aqua water, IoT is capable to display the values that were read by pH and turbidity sensor in real-time. This indicates that IoT makes operator monitoring the pH and turbidity as well as controlling the motor. However, the results show time delay while controlling the motor or receiving sensor data. It may be overcome by having a private server and a stable internet service provider.
