Abstract

Production and consumption of freshwater fish in South Sumatra are one of the biggest among provinces in Sumatra. It continues developing and increasing the fish trading in the South Sumatra. It also generates by the community riverfront culture. However, freshwater fish still trades in the general traditional market. In the market, commodities such as fish, vegetables, meat, and others put together in one building. Whereas, fish trading requires a certain specification to keep the hygiene and freshness of the fish and comfortable of consumers. Therefore, the planning and design of the final project create an architectural solution that concerns in space organization based on the trading activities and the utilities. The design uses two kinds of approaches that are functional and contextual. The functional approach organizes the space arrangement that separates lanes of sellers and buyers. The market is also designed with a loading dock that directly connected to parking areas and freshwater fish wholesaler zone. The contextual approach creates a wetland riverfront architecture, both in culture and function. It makes a unique wetland riverfront building characteristic with riverfront building orientation, stilt foundation, sloping roof, and two access from river and land.
