Abstract

PROBLEMS IN LEARNING ENGLISH SPEAKING PERCEIVED BY THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMP NEGERI 1 TALANG KELAPA ABSTRACT Speaking is human way of expressing thought or feeling by using oral communication and done by two or more people, while problem is a thing that difficult to solve or to understand. This study presents the result of a descriptive study on problems in learning English speaking perceived by eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Talang Kelapa. A Purposive random sampling technique was used in this study to get the samples. There were 95 students from three eighth grade classes that were chosen to be the research subjects. The data were collected by using online questionnaire via Google Form and interview with the teacher, and then data were analyzed quantitatively. The result of this study showed students have problems in internal factors, such as in speaking aspects which are vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency, and then the aspect that hinder the students the most when learning English Speaking is grammar. Most of the students also have psychological problem related to their ability in learning English, such as anxiety and insecurity about their inadequate grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. Some external factors such as mother language usage, confidence, fear of making mistakes, and inadequate usage of English outside English lessons were the dominant cause of students’ problems in learning English. Therefore, the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Talang Kelapa still have problems in learning English Speaking. Keywords: Speaking, Problem, English Speaking, SMP Negeri 1 Talang Kelapa
