Abstract
Introduction: Work as housewives involve a variety of postures and movements that cause musculoskeletal complaints, among them, there are complaints related to the dominant arm used. In addition, the dominant side that is used more often can cause differences on the two sides that can be seen in grip strength. This study aims to analyze the effect of extremity dominance on grip strength and musculoskeletal complaints in housewives. Methods: This analytic observational study is using a cross-sectional design and consecutive sampling technique. Subject of the research is 100 housewives in RW 09 Kelurahan Demang Lebar Daun. Grip strength was assessed using a handgrip dynamometer and musculoskeletal complaints in the upper extremities were identified using a Nordic questionnaire. Results: The results showed that there was a significant mean difference between dominant and non-dominant hand grip strength in right-handed subjects (p=0,000). However, in left-handed subjects the mean difference was not significant (p=0,585). Meanwhile, there was no significant association between the use of the dominant arm and musculoskeletal complaints in the upper extremities (p>0,05). Conclusion: The mean significant difference between dominant and non-dominant hand grip strength is only found in right-handed subjects and there is no significant relationship between the use of dominant arm and musculoskeletal complaints in the upper extremities. Keywords: dominant arm, grip strength, musculoskeletal complaints, housewife
