Abstract
A study have been done to investigate the effect of ethanol extract of white ginger rhizome (Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe) on memory enhancement of white male mice of Swiss-Webster strain which inhibited with scopolamine using passive avoidance test method. The experimental study used 36 mice divided into 6 groups, which were untreated normal group, positive control group given 500 mg/kgBW piracetam, negative control group given 1% sodium CMC suspension, and treatment group 1, treatment 2, treatment 3 were each given ethanol extract of white ginger rhizome with dose of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW orally for 21 days. Retention time data obtained was analyzed by one-way ANOVA and continued with LSD test with 95% confidence level. Ethanol extract of white giinger rhizome have organoleptic characteristic in the form of brown color, thick, distinctive odor and bitter taste, water soluble and ethanol content are 7.50 ± 1.04% and 62.50 ± 0.26%, water content and shrinkage drying are 13.69 ± 2.38% and 15.92 ± 3.24%, and total ash content and acid unsaturated ash content are 2.34 ± 0.85% and 0.22 ± 0.08%. The results showed that ethanol extract of white ginger rhizome dose 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW has no significant difference (p>0.05) with positive control group but is difference (p<0.05) with negative control group and normal control group. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that ethanol extract of white ginger rhizome dose 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW give effect to improve the memory of mice induced by scopolamine, with dose 400 mg/kgBW show best effect because has the longest retention time.
