Abstract

Kebutuhan masyarakat terhadap informasi sangat banyak. Kebutuhan informasi yang banyak berdampak pada dibutuhkannya ruang penyimpanan yang banyak. Media penyimpanan informasi yang digunakan berupa teks, gambar, audio, dan video. Oleh karena itu, data atau informasi yang banyak tersebut perlu di mampatkan / kompres agar penggunaan ruang penyimpanan lebih efisien. Pada penelitian ini digunakan salah satu algoritma pada metode pemapatan data yang bersifat Lossless yaitu algoritma Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW). Jumlah data teks yang digunakan pada penelitian ini berjumlah 160 file dengan 8 kategori berdasarkan ukuran yang kemudian dihitung ukuran sebelum dan sesudah kompresi, rasio, persentase, dan waktu kompresi. Hasil kompresi menunjukkan bahwa tidak terjadi kompresi pada ukuran file dibawah 50 kB dengan rasio 1,05 – 1,40 dengan persentase kompresi kecil dari 0 %. Sedangkan pada ukuran file 50 kB – 2000 kB didapat hasil kompresi dengan rasio 0,84 – 0,50 dengan persentase sebesar 15,72%- 49,75% dan waktu yang dibutuhkan 0,005 detik – 1,345 detik.
