Abstract
ASTM A36 is a steel grade that is widely used in the structure of the offshore petroleum industry. The most vulnerable failure experienced by submerged structures especially in the marine environment, is corrosion where seawater is a corrosive environment that can affect the performance of the infrastructure effect to considerable losses. This research was conducted to determine the effect of variations in heat treatment at 750 C with a holding time of 120 minutes on the corrosion rate of ASTM A36 seawater by conducting hardness testing, corrosion rate analysis, microstructure observations, scanning electron microscope observations, and XRD observations. Based on the results of the research analysis conducted, the heat treatment process is very influential in preventing the corrosion rate in ASTM A36 where the heat treated specimens experience stress relief and improvements to the grain structure so that corrosion attacks that occur can be minimized.
