Abstract

Family support is assistance provided by and to family members to create comfort among family members. This research was conducted to determine the support provided by family members to improve the happiness quality of the elderly after entering retirement age in Sungai Buah Village, Palembang City. The type of this research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through interviews supported by observation. The subjects in this study were people over the age of 60 and had entering retirement from work. Research results from the support of family members to create happiness for the elderly who are entering retirement age in Sungai Buah Village, Palembang City shows that family members have an important role in provide emotional support. Emotional support is provided through attention and good care for the elderly, supporting the provision of various related information elderly life, instrumental support by providing free time to accompany various activities for the elderly, and provide praise and motivation for the elderly as appreciation support to complement the happiness of the elderly. Next ones affect the happiness of the elderly is the status of economic dependence. the elderly always grateful for financial adequacy during retirement. Moreover, the elderly also have good interaction and communication with family members and the environment around. Geographical proximity to family members in everyday life also contributes affect the happiness of the elderly.
