Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the difficulties faced by the teachers of English in developing and writing the teaching materials of Junior High School in Palembang in applying Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP) as well as their causes. The subjects were the teachers of English from eight Junior High Schools in Palembang. The instruments used in this research were documentation sheet and a questionnaire. The results showed that there were four difficulties that the teachers faced: most of them did not: (1) know exactly what KTSP demands; (2) understand the students’ need, interest, and ability; (3) really understand of how to evaluate teaching materials in order to find the most appropriate ones; and (4) know how to develop the teaching materials that were in line with the standard and basic competences of the curriculum. In addition, there were five causes of the above difficulties where most of them: (1) did not get enough training or socialization in understanding the concept of KTSP; (2) did not know or care with the students’ need, interest, and ability since there were so many students in a classroom; (3) were not motivated to develop their own teaching materials since they did not know the procedures in developing the teaching materials; (4) lacked of time, energy, and fund to develop and write their own teaching materials since they are busy in moonlighting; and (5) did not competent enough in writing their own teaching materials.
