Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of vegetable tanners which derived from areca nuts in retanning process on the physical quality of tilapia tanned skin and analyze for the best concentration of areca nut (areca catechu). This study used a randomized block design with 3 treatments, the concentrations of areca nut (areca catechu) extract are 7,5%, 10%, 12,5% as A1, A2, A3 respectively which repeated 3 times. The observed parameters in this study were physical analysis consist of skin thickness, tensile strength, elongation, tear strength, and wrinkle temperature. The results showed the treatments had a significant effect on the physical quality of tilapia skin. The skin thickness values ranged from 0,9 to 1,1 mm, tensile strength values 2315,82 N/cm2, elongation value 46,12%, tear strength values 244,11 N/cm and indigo wrinkle temperature 129,21 OC. The best treatment was concentration of 12.5% areca nut (areca catechu) as A3 treatment.
