Abstract

Air quality is an important aspect for rearing japanese ornamental carp fish. Suitable water quality can support survival rate and at the same time can influence the brightness of the japanese ornamental carp fish's body color. One effort that can be made to maintain optimal water quality is by implementing a recirculation system. The aim of this research was to determine the use of recirculation installations with different polyester physical filters combined with activated coconut shell charcoal and zeolite to maintain the water quality of ornamental carp fish rearing. This research was carried out at the Basic Fisheries Laboratory, Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. This research was carried out from July to September 2023. This research was designed used a completely randomized design consisting of four treatments and three replications, namely P1 (japmat, activated coconut shell charcoal and zeolite), P2 (sponge, activated coconut shell charcoal and zeolite), P3 (biofoam, activated coconut shell charcoal and zeolite), and P4 (greenwoll, activated coconut shell charcoal and zeolite). The research results showed that P3 was the best treatment, producing an average temperature ranging from 27.79-28.17°C, pH 7.02-7.04, dissolved oxygen 4.76-5.43 mg L-1, ammonia 0.005-0.029 mg L-1 and turbidity 0.61-1.25 NTU. Physical foam filters in the form of biofoam have been proven to play a more optimal role in maintaining water quality because it have tighter pore holes than other physical foam filters. The application of a physical foam filter in the form of biofoam can also support other parameters such as absolute growth of length and weight, survival rate, feed efficiency and the brightness of the japanese ornamental carp fish body color are higher than other treatments.
