Abstract

Excessive free radicals can cause oxidative stress, leading to various degenerative diseases. Natural antioxidants derived from plants have the potential to counteract these effects. Nypa fruticans fiber contains high levels of polyphenols, making it a potential source of antioxidants that can be formulated into lozenges as a practical and consumer-friendly dosage form. This study aimed to describe the physical, chemical, sensory, and antioxidant activity characteristics of lozenges formulated with Nypa fruticans fiber extract. The research was conducted experimentally with four extract concentrations (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%) accompanied by adjusted levels of Avicel PH 102, with each treatment replicated three times. The results showed that tablet hardness ranged from 1.00 to 2.17 kg/cm², size uniformity was 1.35–1.39 cm², and disintegration time was less than 30 minutes. Chemical analysis indicated that the highest total phenolic content was found in the 60% extract formulation, with a value of 31.84 mg GAE/g, while moisture content ranged from 4.75% to 12.52%. Sensory evaluation revealed that panelists preferred the 20% extract formulation. Antioxidant activity was indicated by IC50 values ranging from 2.228 μg/ml to 41.166 μg/ml. These findings suggest that differences in extract concentration significantly affected most parameters except size uniformity, with the best formulation obtained at P2 (20% extract), although improvements are still needed in tablet hardness.
